High temperatures during a cold start in winter are abnormal for screw air compressors and may be caused by the following reasons:
Ambient Temperature Influence
When ambient temperatures are low in winter, the operating temperature of the air compressor should generally be around 90°C. Temperatures exceeding 100°C are considered abnormal. Low temperatures may reduce lubricant fluidity and cooling efficiency, but the normal design temperature range should be within 95°C.
Cooling System Malfunction
Cooling Fan Malfunction: Check that the fan is operating. For air-cooled air compressors, ensure that the air inlet and outlet are not blocked by snow or foreign matter.
Cooler Blockage: Prolonged cleaning may cause blockage in the plate-fin heat exchanger or water-cooling tube bundle, requiring high-pressure air purging or chemical cleaning.
Insufficient Cooling Water: Check the cooling water flow rate and temperature. Excessive water temperature or insufficient flow rate will reduce heat exchange efficiency.
Lubrication System Problems
Lubricating Oil Level Malfunction: After shutdown, the oil level must be above the high mark (H/MAX) and not below the low mark (L/MIN) during operation. Oil shutoff valve failure: Failure of the shutoff valve to open during loading can lead to oil shortage and high temperatures. Check the solenoid valve’s operating condition.
Oil filter blockage: A failed bypass valve can cause insufficient oil supply, leading to high temperatures. Clean or replace the filter element.
Other factors
A malfunctioning thermal control valve can allow lubricating oil to enter the engine head without bypassing the cooler. Check the valve core for proper operation.
Long-term lack of maintenance or severe carbon deposits can also reduce heat dissipation efficiency. Maintenance every 2,000 hours is recommended.
If all of the above checks are normal, contact the manufacturer to confirm whether the equipment is suitable for low-temperature environments. If necessary, install a preheating device or replace the lubricating oil with a low-temperature lubricant.
